Our Core Values

Our Core Values are Worship, Outreach, Relationship and Discipleship

How did the church come up with these core values?
At a visioning conference in 2003, Pastor Herzen Andone gave a vision, born out of a year-long process of prayer, fasting, bible study and listening to the deep spiritual needs of the community. It was a vision of a place where people encounter the transforming presence of God, are invited into relationship with God through Jesus Christ, and where they, through intentional spiritual discipleship, can experience healing, equipping and strengthening as families and as individuals for the journey of faith.

WORD--a clever acronym?
Think it was intentional that the first letter of each word spells out WORD, as in The Word of God? Well, it wasn't. Not by the team that came up with the core values, anyway. At the visioning conference, three separate teams (of staff and lay people) were assigned the task of naming the core values of HFUMC. All three teams came up with the same four core values: Worship, Outreach, Relationship and Discipleship. These core values provide the bedrock, the foundation of God's church here. They are central to everything we do and will continue to do.

Although the teams came up with the same values, it wasn't until they got back home and were writing up the core values that one of the writers noticed that the values spelled out WORD. Hmm.

What were the priorities as the team discerned core values?
Priority was placed on ministries that reach out to people in the wider community, not just our own members. All around us, people are broken emotionally, and spiritually far from God. Our job is to strengthen and equip them as maturing disciples of Jesus Christ.
